Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart iPhone Vid
Posted by Brian Crecente at 12:01 AM on July 8, 2008
Someone has posted what he claims to be a video of Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart running on the iPhone. If it is the game, and not just a video playing of gameplay playing on the device, it looks like you steer by tilting the iPhone and pick up and use power-ups by touching the screen. The game actually looks like it could be quite a bit a fun. And it doesn't look like it would suffer from a player's beefy hands blocking the screen during play. Of course, it could just as likely be a fake.
Update: Polarbit is publishing the game. Still no idea if this video really shows it off though.

just some info,
CBNK3D for iPhone is not a port neither an emulated version. It is development from scratch although using the Karts and Tracks from CTTR as a reference, CTR was also used as a reference for gameplay. The game will be among the first ones to reach the Appstore.

@Ajax: We'll be reviewing all of the iphone games when they hit. Make sure to check back on Friday (if the app store actually launches on time) for our hands on coverage.

it might be a fake, but it is not a video.
if it was a video, the administrative debris would appear on the screen upon touching.

What surprises me about this video is the sound.
It actually HAS sound!
I've played quite a few games on my iPhone and they rarely (if ever) have sound.
Even SNES Emulators have to have the sound switched off because it affects performance. (Frame-rate issues.)
Poorly coded emulators? Maybe.
Hopefully the video is real for 2 key reasons:
1: It means developers are getting the hang of the SDK and we're in for some decent games that perform well.
2: The game itself actually looks pretty good!

Racing Thunder was made available for the (jailbroken) iPhone months ago. Albeit extremely buggy, the controls were impressively responsive. I see no reason why Crash Bandicoot would be a fake.

@zios33: IF he was really touching the screen and it was a video playing it should have popped up the on-screen controls. Of course it could be that he wasn't actually touching the screen.

Umm, your sister site, Gizmodo, reported on this last week. They had a press release from the company, too. I'm fairly certain it's real. Were you guys (Kotaku) not aware of this? On a related note, you two sites should collaborate on the upcoming release of iPhone games, since the topic resides in both of your domains. That way you could avoid this kind of mistake in the future.

the nitro cart's were always inferior to the original CTR
i'd be more excited about seeing that coming to psp rather than some apple cashin running crash's name deeper into the ground.

That looks intense! I'm not into the whole cartoon-y mario kart racing games thing, but you'd expect to see a Wii-like "Remember kids, always wear your wrist strap!" disclaimer before the game starts.

@VakeroRokero: For all the terrible clones, Crash Team Racing remains a large part of my childhood. Too bad I had no friends since they were too busy with their N64s...

Yes, I always considered Crash Team Racing the best kart-racer ever. shame I sold my PS1 years ago.
But I heard I can download it from the PSN for the PSP? Is that true?

CTR, for me, always ruled the kart racing genre. Grabbed it off the PSN network and it plays wonderfully in the PSP. Always felt more dynamic than the MK games. I shouldn't have to put on a flame-suit for that observation.

I know this is completely off topic but I need to know something... A friend of mine is going to the USA next week and is offering to buy me an iPhone 3G... Here in Portugal they'll come out on the 11th but will be extremely expensive (everything's more expensive over here) and if I buy one in America it'll cost me like half the price... I just need to know if it will work over here seeing as it is Quad-Band, etc... Thanks

Why do tilt controls in racing games always turn me off?
Oh. That's right. They never work well enough to ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME. At least without crashing into walls constantly.

Looks nice.
But I have tried that Raging Thunder. Controls sucks, it's too sensitive.
I hope it's different in Crash Nitro Kart.

...And still we wait for the original CTR to come to the PS Store. It's in the Japanese store! (then again, what isn't?) I have no idea about Nitro Kart, but CTR is still my favorite kart racer.

I love Crash Nitro Kart. Yeah, I had the N-Gage QD for a few months. And yeah, CNK was one of the games I played a lot on it. It's a ton of fun.
@SuperCollider: No one thinks it's fake in a "there's no way this is possible!" but rather, "Is this actually in development and should we expect this to be released ever?"

@henri1kk:
I think you'd have to have it unlocked.
Rumour has it that new iPhone buyers are being forced to activate their phones in-store as they buy them.
I'd recommend getting an "old" iPhone. The 3G option is nice but there's other ways to drain a battery.
(Plus the "old" iPhone has LOTS of cool stuff for it, games, apps, etc. Not easy to find one but they're easy to unlock)

I've never played a Crash Bandicoot game, including the racing ones. I have to say, it looks like they just took SMK and put different textures and models in. I mean, there are boxes with question marks on, there are rainbow-coloured acceleration strips....
Seems to me like the people designing this game just aren't that creative.

PROBABLE FAKE
Seriously, I doubt a NK port is on the way (no reason why NOT, but have the devs ever expressed interest?). And if it were an emu, then it'd be CTR. Which it's not.

@PlayerX: What you DO find in regards to CTR is that the tracks are a lot more varied and feature huge drops, jumps etc. It also feels a lot faster than your average MK, even on the highest CC.
I'm not denigrating MK at all, just listing my preference. CTR was an incredibly polished title back in the day, and still remains so to this day.
And it's up on the PAL region PSN network as a PSX download. Not sure why it hasn't been released in the States yet, but that's another PSN region-related dropping-of-the-ball.
